The quality one's life is what is important.

Preparing for this weekend’s service I’ve been collecting quotes from the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King – who we remember and honor as a nation next Monday (and we will acknowledge in our services).  Reading through his words I am reminded again of the courage and vision that God used in extraordinary ways to transform the world.  I’m also reminded that churches like Mountaintop would not exist with the sacrifice that he and so many other’s made.

One of the quotes summed up his life so well:

The quality, not the longevity, of one's life is what is important.

Reading through these encourages me to focus on the quality of my life:

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.

Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase.

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.

We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies.

Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle. And so we must straighten our backs and work for our freedom. A man can't ride you unless your back is bent.

He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.

A man who won't die for something is not fit to live.

I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.

I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality... I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.

We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.

An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

The time is always right to do what is right.

Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into friend.

The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.

The first question which the priest and the Levite asked was: 'If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?' But... the good Samaritan reversed the question: 'If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?'

Nonviolence is a powerful and just weapon. which cuts without wounding and ennobles the man who wields it. It is a sword that heals.

Never succumb to the temptation of bitterness.

We may have all come on different ships, but we're in the same boat now.

Ordinary People Do Extraordinary Things

For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.
1 Corinthians 1: 25 - 27

At Mountaintop one of our core beliefs is that:

God uses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things.

That’s why we are focusing Wednesday evening around preparing and equipping us for whatever God calls us to do and it’s why we are making Ordinary People our theme for January.

Each week at Mountaintop God is using ordinary people to make His extraordinary things possible.  Beginning this Sunday we are going to be introducing you to some of those people and recognizing their service.

Throughout January, we are celebrating volunteers who serve regularly On the Mountain with Children's ministry, Student ministry, Worship/Media and Guest Services as well as volunteers who serve regularly with our local and international partners Off the Mountain.

Look for posters with some of their faces around campus, listen for their stories and visit the iServe booth where there will be small tokens of our appreciation for those who serve regularly and a way to sign up for those who want to serve in 2014.

We simply could not do church without these extraordinary ordinary people, so join us in the celebration and even better join them in doing something extraordinary this year!

Consistency

The title of Eugene Peterson’s 1980 classic offers my favorite definition of discipleship – A Long Obedience in the Same Direction.  And the subtitle of the book sums up one of the primary challenges to discipleship – we live in an instant society.

Because we expect instantaneous results sometimes we struggle to maintain the long obedience required for success.  We become impatient when we don’t realize immediate success and in response we give up too quick or change course midstream.  The truth is consistency is the difference between failure and success.   The wisdom of Proverbs understood that:

Steady plodding brings prosperity; hasty speculation brings poverty.
Proverbs 21: 5

Consistency is often the difference between failure and success.   According to author Eric Holtzclaw here are some of the reasons why:

1. Consistency allows for measurement.
Until you have tried something new for a period of time and in a consistent manner, you can't decide if it works or not.  How do you measure effectiveness if what you are measuring isn't performed consistently?

2. Consistency creates accountability.
When we are consistent we can clearly communicate expectations and then hold one other accountable for the results.

3. Consistency establishes your reputation.
Growth requires a track record of success. You can't establish a track record if you are constantly shifting gears or trying new tactics. Many efforts fail before they get to the finish line, but not because the tactic was flawed or goals weren't clear. The problem is often that the team simply didn't stay the course to achieve the objective.

4. Consistency makes you relevant.
An instant society is filled with fads that come and go (consider the Harlem Shake).  Consistency establishes weight that makes the organization relevant.

5. Consistency maintains your message.
Communication and marketing experts agree that in order to be heard messages must be repeated consistently.  As the “noise” around us increases the necessity of consistency also increases.

As we enter 2014 what are some of the areas in your life where you need to maintain a long obedience in the same direction?  How can you be more consistent?

How to Make 2014 Your Best Year Ever

Happy New Year!

By now your Christmas decorations are down and put away (or like mine soon will be). For some of us the Bowl season is over, for some of us it’s tonight and for some of us THE game is Monday night!  For all of us 2014 has begun.

Here are two things you can do to make 2014 your best year ever.

Spend time every day in God’s Word.  Reading the Bible daily feeds our hearts in ways that nothing else can come close to doing.    I challenge (encourage, invite) you to join me in reading through the Bible this year.  Here’s some steps you might take to make the Bible part of your daily routine:  EVERY DAY BIBLE

Commit yourself to worship.  Every time we gather for worship we declare that we won’t let what’s wrong with us or with the world, keep us from celebrating what’s right with God.  At Mountaintop we have the opportunity to worship on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings.  When you can't join us in person on Sunday mornings you can always join us online at Mountaintop Online Church.  Here’s a hint of what we will be focusing on in the coming months:

Sunday Mornings
On Campus and Online @9:30 and 11:15

January – Ordinary People:  How God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things!

February – Why Is God Mad At Me?:  Answers from the book of Job.

March – Noah:  The Real Story

Wednesday Evenings
On Campus @ 6:30

This winter we will be focusing on leadership development.  Paul wrote to the Ephesians that we are to teach so that “God’s people would be thoroughly equipped to minister and build up the body of the Anointed One.” (Ephesians 4: 12).  Therefore, on Wednesday evenings our purpose will be to equip spiritual leaders to learn and share a better way of life.

January Topics
8- Spiritual Leadership
15-Spiritual Identity
22-Leading through adversity
29-Sharing your faith

February Topics
5-Know what you believe why you believe
12-Prayer and Fasting
19-Hardships in leadership
26-Spiritual Gifts

All of our worship services (Sundays and Wednesdays) have great music and programs available for kids and students.  Everyone is always welcome and encouraged to bring a friend.

2014 promises to be an incredible year.  Make the most of it by spending time in God’s Word and in worship and then hold on as He takes you to the places He has prepared.

For His glory!

Bring the Bible into Your Everyday in 2014

“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth…” —Isa. 43:18–19

Happy New Year! God is constantly in the process of making “new creations” (2 Cor. 5:17). But in certain seasons—like the coming of a New Year—we tend to be more aware of His renewals than at other times.  As you consider goals and resolutions for 2014, here are three simple ways you can make the Bible a daily part of your life:

Find your #Verse2014. Choose one verse that you can focus on throughout 2014. Invite it into your life, display it, and share it with people you know.

Commit to a Bible Plan. This has helped so many make God’s Word a daily part of their life. Sign up for a short, 20- or 30-day devotional. Build your confidence by completing your first plan. Then come back for another. Included is a list below of some of great starters.  I’m reading the Chronological plan this year.

Share the Word. Invite family and friends to read with you. Help them get the Bible App, show them how to sign up for the plan you’re using, then discuss what you’ve read. Inspire others by sharing what you’re reading in emails, texts, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. God’s Word comes alive in community (Heb. 4:12).

2014 is going to be a great year – it will be even better if you commit to spending time each day brining the Bible into your everyday!  Here’s where you can find a reading plan for 2014 – Bible Reading Plans
